Lake Barcroft: A Changing Landscape

<!doctype html>

June 2012 marked the 40th anniversary of when Lake Barcroft almost went away forever. That was the year of Hurricane Agnes. If you were in the area during Agnes on June 21 of 1972, you probably remember the torrential downpours, high winds, massive flooding and heavy storm damage that devastated many neighborhoods in the Northern Virginia and Metro Washington, DC area. The nearly 60-year-old dam at Lake Barcroft was washed out, threatening to change forever the landscape of this historical community. Instead, the lake was eventually replenished and the Lake Barcroft area continues to flourish today. The lake was built and in use in 1915, although the property’s recorded history dates back before the Battle of Bull Run.

Changes in Lake Barcroft
Over the years, the Lake Barcroft subdivision has changed and grown, now numbering more than 1,000 homes in this community. While many of the homes around Lake Barcroft were originally built as smaller houses in the 1950s and ’60s, some of them have been renovated to increase the size to accommodate larger families with more space, especially in the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.  First- and second-story home additions to nearly double the size of many of these houses on treed lots have become a growing trend in the Lake Barcroft area. Waterfront lots have added upper decks, outdoor kitchens and storage sheds for boating and yard equipment.

Lake Barcroft Remodeling Projects
Some of the most popular features in Lake Barcroft home remodeling projects are the additions of walk-in closets and custom storage units, wood floors, granite counters, outdoor or indoor pools. For some of the homes that were built about 60 years ago that have not had previous renovations, upgrades in plumbing, electricity, fixtures and appliances are also common. Modern energy-efficient appliances have been much the focus of kitchen remodeling projects, as have creating larger kitchen spaces for meal preparation, cooking or dining.

While it’s hard to believe that it’s been 40 years since Lake Barcroft was changed by the big storm, it’s interesting to see how this subdivision has evolved and continues to change through various home remodeling projects.

With these trends and with the right home building team, you can turn your dream bathroom into a reality. What are you waiting for then?
