Lakevale Estates: Modernizing a Neighborhood

Back in the 1960s, when Vienna was just a sleepy little town in Fairfax County, the idea of building a neighborhood community centered around a man-made spring-fed lake was still a novel one. Lakevale Estates was one of several neighborhoods in Vienna developed off of Vale Road to make room for the many families moving to the suburbs of Washington, DC. Now a bustling town in the heart of Fairfax County, Vienna is known for its comfortable homes and friendly neighborhoods. Lakevale is still a family-friendly community with suburban charm. Many of the homes in Lakevale are now undergoing custom remodeling projects to keep up with the trends of multi-generational families and modern technology.

History of Lakevale Estates
According to Lakevale.org, most of the 150 acres of land that now comprises Lakevale Estates was prime plantation and orchard land in the 1800s and early 1900s. In 1955, a portion of the land was purchased by Lois and William Newton. Another portion of the land was purchased by the Newtons in 1957 and turned into a horse breeding farm. Much of what is now Lakevale was eventually sold to L.R. Broyhill in the summer of ’62, with another portion purchased by Broyhill in 1965. Broyhill later sold 100 lots to a builder. On December 31, 1966, the first home in Lakevale sold for $40,000. The community was built in three stages and was completed in 1969, with the final new-construction home being sold in 1970.

Lakevale Today
With recreation at the center of community life, and 28 acres reserved for this purpose, homeowners spend much of their time at the neighborhood swimming pool, playground, lake and clubhouse. You’ll find some using the basketball and tennis courts and the baseball and soccer fields. There are 283 homes in the tree-lined community. Most of them feature colonial, rambler, split-level and split-foyer layouts. While they were originally built as single-family homes, several owners have done renovations and additions with in-law suites to accommodate grown children or aging parents. The number of bedrooms range from three to five, prompting the need for additional space in some households.

With the lot sizes typically ranging from one-third to one-half acre, some space is available from side to side for expansions, especially on the corner lots. Additionally, homeowners are building on to the front or back portions of their homes or putting in upper floors, especially if there have already been home additions built by previous owners. A garage on the side is still a popular remodeling project, although many homeowners already converted their carports into attached garages over the past four decades. Now they are adding rooms above them as home office space and hobby rooms.

Half- and three-quarter baths are sometimes expanded into full baths to accommodate today’s extended families. Unfinished basements are being converted into extra bedrooms, baths and recreational spaces. Decks and patios are popular with people who love to entertain and spend time outside with friends and neighbors.

While the kitchens in these homes in Vienna have always been considered fairly spacious for a family of four or more, the addition of energy-efficient appliances, reworked cabinet space and contemporary countertops are transforming them into gems for the modern era.
