Sarah’s Style File – May 2014

Welcome to Sarah’s Style File, I’m Sarah, Foster Remodeling Solutions Senior Design Consultant and each month I’m bringing to you a feature project to experience the remodeling process with us!  For this month’s highlighted project I have chosen a custom basement remodel in Great Falls. With this project, we started with an unfinished blank slate, albeit a large one, and created multiple rooms of spaces so gorgeous and bright that you don’t feel like you’re in a basement at all!

Basement Remodeling

Before and After Basement Remodeling
Before                                                                                       After

The main goals of this project were to finish off the large approximately 1500 square foot basement with a media room, billiards room, exercise room, a custom bar area, and an entry space for the walk-out to the pool with a full size bath keeping a small portion unfinished for the utilities and storage. As you can see from the photos, we were definitely able to create quite a luxurious space in this large basement. Since the property sloped there were many existing windows off of the back of the home (including the walk-out French doors) that we used to our full advantage when laying out the space place. Daylight is the key to creating comfortable and enjoyable basement space; no one wants to feel like they are in a cave, so when possible I definitely recommend trying to get some daylight into any basement. Keep in mind also that when finishing a basement you must provide egress per code and you can use this opportunity to put in a window well or a walk-out staircase which will definitely add nice daylight to the room. Insulation is also quite important in a basement; here we used an R-15 value wall insulation that keeps the area comfortable all year round. A combination of recessed lights and more decorative pendant lights provide a nice layering effect to the light and also help to define the individual spaces.

The finishes in each area help to create a unique feel to each room. As the main floor finish we installed an engineered prefinished oak hardwood from Mullican flooring that is a lovely 7″ plank with distressing. In this application we glued down the planks as it was a better choice for noise attenuation and the overall look is quite stunning, wider planks tend to feel much more high end and the distressing was a great way for the floors to look like they had been there for years. To bring out the rich color in the flooring we designed a very dramatic “pub” space for the bar area. With custom Crystal cabinets in Cherry in a custom dark espresso stain we installed Black Galaxy granite countertops on the upper bar and stainless steel countertops on the lower section where the sink and kegerator are installed for easy clean up. Stained faux beams and wood columns in the same color bring the pub feel to life while mirror backed glass shelves provide storage and display for items. Underneath the staircase we installed custom wine bottle storage with glass doors and integrated light which almost makes them an art piece! In the bathroom area we designed a separate half bath and a shower room to allow guests ability to shower and change before or after pool use. In these spaces and in the entry way from the walk out we installed a porcelain floor tile with a wood grain pattern and texture for durability and slip resistance. This is a great choice for those who like the look of wood, but want something more resilient and water safe. To provide contrast to some of the darker finishes elsewhere we install semi-custom Current cabinetry in the entry and half bath in Antique White paint with light Kashmir White granite countertops. Finally, in the exercise room we installed mirrors to assist in making sure their form is perfect and vinyl composite tiles from Congoleum for ease of cleaning and to stand up to the heavy equipment that was installed.
