Transforming Your Laundry Room

Doing laundry is something that no one enjoys, but everyone knows is a must. However, a cluttered, inconvenient laundry room will make the task more difficult. Have you ever considered a laundry room renovation? We’ve put together a few ideas for relatively simple renovations that may ultimately innovate the way you do your laundry. If you find yourself dreading laundry day more than all the other tasks you complete, maybe one of these renovations will make life a little easier for you.

  • laundry-room-countertops-thmbAdd Countertops – Choosing a front-loading washer and dryer and installing them within countertops (much like your dishwasher is installed in a countertop system in the kitchen) will give you plenty of counter space for folding laundry and completing other tasks. The best part of this renovation is that you are given some creative license—you can choose from any of the fresh, modern countertop options available today.
  • A Utility Sink – Utility sinks in the laundry room are much more useful than you would ever imagine. Think about how nice it would be to soak stained clothes in the laundry room. Imagine using this sink for a bleach load. Additionally, you always have a handy sink for washing your hands too.
  • laundry-room-shelving-thmbConsider Custom Shelving – Custom shelving is an option that works great in a walk-in closet. However, it can be a magnificent choice for laundry rooms too. Adding cubbies, drawers and hanging rods will give you plenty of space for items that need to be sewn or even those objects that don’t seem to have a home anywhere else in the house.
  • Fold-Out Racks – If you find yourself taking advantage of any available space to dry clothing that cannot go in the dryer, an easy solution might be to install fold-out drying racks. These will be available for your use when you need them and can be folded up into the wall when you do not.
  • laundry-room-window-thmbAdd a Window – While a window may not be a “must” for a laundry room, it is an excellent idea. You can let in a little fresh air, let some of the stale, dryer air escape. Adding a window will also help add natural light to a space that can often feel cramped and tight. Depending on the placement of the laundry room in the house, a window may also allow you to keep your eye on your yard or driveway.
  • Under Counter Pet Bed – In many homes, the laundry room becomes the “pet room.” If this is where your dog or cat goes to eat and relax anyway, why not create a space of his or her own? If you have a counter, leave the door off one area and install a washable pet bed inside. This keeps the bed from taking up floor space and gives fluffy a safe, comfortable place to escape.
